Financial literacy isn't a skill — it's a lifestyle. Take it from Curtis "Wall Street" Carroll. As an incarcerated individual, Caroll knows the power of a dollar. While in prison, he taught himself how to read and trade stocks, and now he shares a simple, powerful message: we all need to be more savvy with our money. Curtis “Wall Street” Carroll overcame poverty, illiteracy, incarceration and a lack of outside support to become a stock investor, creator and teacher of his own financial literacy philosophy. Carroll grew up in Oakland, California surrounded by poverty. In 1996, at 17 years old, he committed a robbery where a man was killed. He turned himself in and ended up in prison with a 54-to-life sentence. While in prison, the stock market captured his attention, but he was illiterate. Finally motivated to learn, he taught himself how to read at 20-21 years old, and then he started studying the stock market. Carroll's role models changed from drug dealers and sports figures to Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. He wanted others to learn this new way of making money. When Carroll arrived at San Quentin in 2012, he met Troy Williams, who helped him start the Financial Literacy Program. Together they created the philosophy F.E.E.L (Financial Empowerment Emotional Literacy) that teaches people to recognize how their emotions affect their financial decision, and how to separate the two. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at http://ted.com/tedx

I am here to help you learn English. If you have trouble listening, you can READ what I am saying in the box. I taught at Wall Street English ( a world-wide English School) in Beijing, China- for 4 years. And I have taught ESL to foreigners for 6 years. After 8 lessons with me, you will notice your English improving. I taught more than 1000 ESL students at Wall Street English. I taught general English to beginners… and some of my students were at higher levels like the PhD level at Renmin, Peking, and Tsinghua Universities. Many were at the IELTS level, and were studying to go to university abroad. Also many of my students were in business and wanted to study English to help with their jobs. I taught many IELTS classes and many business classes to my students. I have a university degree and a TESOL Certificate ( the same as CELTA) and 20 years of teaching experience, 6 of which were ESL- teaching English to foreigners. In each lesson we will go over vocabulary, grammar, and conversation. YOU will get to speak at least 70 % of the time. We are here to make sure that YOU learn to speak English and NOT me since I am already fluent : ) We will decide what YOU want to learn. However, I do recommend using the Oxford Picture Dictionary, English - Chinese. We can use some online material. But I do recommend that after 2 or 3 lessons with me, that you try to buy this book. It is available in bookstores in China, or possible to order it. But if you don’t want to use Oxford, and you want to learn something else instead, we can also do that. The Oxford book has more than 30 subjects including: "food, going shopping, home furniture, going on trips," and "going to the doctor " - such as this example here. Here you can see the vocabulary. In this book there are also business subjects like "at the office." Here you can see this example… We can cover additional business topics that are free online. We can cover résumés, job interviews, office problems, making business conferences, language for business meetings and more… Each lesson includes vocabulary, and some grammar points on one of the pages. I will assign you homework where you will study the vocabulary, then the grammar, and then write a small story about the topic. When you meet with me, first, I will test you on the vocabulary and grammar, then correct your written story, and finally have a conservation with you. If it is too easy, I will give you more homework. If it is too hard, I will make it easier. If you have any questions please ask me. You are free to go online and find something to prepare before meeting me and then we can go over it together. I look forward to working with you. Bye! "

“I was working at a bus depot,” says Andrew Hallam, describing the summer that changed his life. “I was 19, and I was saving money for college. It was a night shift, and there was a mechanic there [named Russ]. Everybody said to me — if Russ wants to talk to you about money, make sure you listen to him.” Andrew harbored doubts. “I thought, why would I listen to a mechanic about money?” Fortunately, though, Andrew took their advice. Russ became an unexpected mentor. He taught Andrew the power of investing small amounts over long periods of time. He encouraged Andrew to use part of his lunch money — $3.50 per day, or around $100 a month — to open his first investment account. Andrew listened. He invested small sums throughout college, often as little as $100 a month. After graduation, he accepted a job as an English teacher. His salary amounted to $28,000 per year in take-home pay (after taxes). Andrew saved nearly half. He avoided rent payments, placing advertisements in the newspaper in search of house-sitting side gigs. He rode a bicycle to work; he showered and shaved after he arrived. He bought pasta and potatoes at the grocery store, but picked his own clams for added protein. He repaid $12,000 in student loans within one year of graduation. Then he aggressively began investing in the market. By his mid-30’s, Andrew became a millionaire on a teacher’s salary. And by age 40, Andrew was more-than-comfortably financially independent. In today’s interview, Andrew shares his story. _____ Andrew wrote a book called Millionaire Teacher: Nine Rules of Wealth You Should Have Learned in School. In the latter half of today’s episode, we cover the first three rules of wealth: Rule 1: Spend like you want to grow rich. (Don’t waste money on junk.) Rule 2: Use the greatest financial ally you have. (Time.) Rule 3: Small percentages pack big punches. (Avoid high-fee funds.) In next week’s episode, we’ll cover Andrew’s other six rules for building wealth.
